Our computers professor is design school asked us to create a collage using Photoshop and this is what I came up with. The synthesis and basic effects are by me and the heavy effects are made by my very talented professor. Here it is!

Hello people!

First of all, I would like to thank you once more for visiting my blog. I see that I have several visits from all over the world every day and this makes me really happy!
Now, a little update from me...Exams are over and I'm now totally into the new semester. We have three important and big projects running in one subject and the two of them are 'real'. What do I mean? Well, a marble company based in F.Y.R.O.M asked our college to design their logo and the product logo for a specific marble they have. The best three works will be awarded a money prize and of course the first wil be actually selected for the company. The second project has to do with the creation of an anniversary composition/design for the 50 years of a Greek-German private school in Athens. The best three will be awarded money prizes as well again and the best will be selected for them. The third project has to do with the total re-design of the commercial identity of an airline. I'm feverishly looking for companies with bad design now, so if you have anything to suggest, please leave me a comment! :)

Well, what about the sophisticated thing? He he, nah...I just felt like suggesting two books to you, which I'm now reading. The first one is Robert Bringhurst's The Elements of Typographic Style (thanks Maria!) and the second is 1000 More Graphic Elements by Grant Design Collaborative (thanks Elissavet!). I highly recommend them for any of you who are interested in typography and modern, clean design.

Hello all! I hope you're fine! Well, here's an update from me. These are five posters I designed as a project for college. Let me give you some background information first.
First of all, the Greek part of Mdedecins Du Monde is celebrating its 20 years of presence in Greece and they asked our college to make an anniversary poster. All of us are designing, but only the best of them will be exhibited in their special celebration show they will throw out in Athens. I hope one of mines will be in :) The blue one says "We started with a few supplies and a lot of love....and we multiplied them".The orange on says "one vision, a lot of missions, one target"

We also had to design a poster for Amnesty International. They didn't ask as to, it was just an imaginary project. I chose to work on racism and this is what I came up with. The white one says "me" in some languages in the bubbles and below "everyone has a story to tell. respect it, no matter what colour it's written with". The one with the apples says "they are not the same" and below "you know that they are equally important though"

Last, but not least, we designed an anti-smoking poster. Here are my two results. The brownish one says "don't let cigarette push you to destruction". The blue one says "quit it before it quits you".

So, that's all. What do you think? My exams are on Tuesday, so I hope I will get some good marks!

Some months ago I attended the famous Design S exhibition that visited Athens for some days and I was impressed (once more) by the way the Scandinavian minds perceive and create the world. My main focus was on Stockholm Design Lab's project for Askul (a Japanese paper company). Those packages were just awesome...so stylish and minimal. I fell in love with them and I decided to present them in my blog, in case you don't know them. Way to go people! I wish I'll be able to hold a co-operation with you some day because I admire your style so much.

the suppression of creativity

Sometimes people are really stubborn. I generally knew this but I now face it every week in college. Okay, it's this professor we have in Graphic Design Applications course, who's really STUCK on his preference for handmade work. I got this form the very first time we had class but I didn't think he would be so rejecting and blindfolded to everything he didn't like, that is, everything that is made using design programs like Illustrator or Corel. Well, as a person I generally like attention and I was really mad the very first time he didn't pay any to me because I made my projects using a computer. Okay man, you like handwork but can't you just REALISE that not anyone is capable -or even likes- this way of working on a project? Personally, I consider most of the handmade posters etc. very childish-looking and quite unprofessional. I don't reject them. It's just that I like the computer-based ones more. If I was a professor, I would never neglect somebody that didn't work the way I wanted. It's so immature and stupid. You have to give attention and feedback to everyone. I'm paying you to do so, after all!
Just to give you an idea of it, yesterday he made us make a poster in classroom using ONLY hand -no computers were allowed of course because he asked us to leave our work when we would leave (we DID have computers in class and he COULD take the files in his usb-stick but he just wanted us to make the project HIS WAY).
I guess that the root of the problem is that we tend to keep old people as professors eternally in the institutions. Young people have fresh ideas and I believe that we should generally cope with the new technologies of our era. Any hallucinations that we could maintain the old era for ever are really of no use.

This was just a statement I had to share with you because I feel I'm drowning when somebody tries to muzzle my creative thoughts.

Last month my sister asked me to buy her a wall calendar (every year she asks me to do so because she trusts my taste, hehe). This year though was different. I went through all my favourite shops but I found nothing that I would buy for my self, so I didn't buy it for my sister either. It was then when I cam up with an idea! I told her "hey, what am I doing here? I'm studying graphic design, so I'm gonna make you one!". Today I gave it to her and she was sooo happy with it! What do you think? Do you like it? :)

Every time I discover a person who is totally into my style I make a happy dance! :) This is the case with Mihail Mihaylov, a graphic designer and illustrator from Bulgaria. His work is so amazing, totally modernistic and minimal, exactly the way I like. Bold colours, typography in its utmost, just superb. Here's how Mihail describes himself:

"Influenced by the aesthetics of modernism, I love doing minimalistic graphic design, playing with type, colors and shapes. I'm not confined to a specific style but rather experiment in order to find the right visual language conveing the certain message."

Here are some of his projects that made me drool. Way to go Mihail! I wish that I'll be able to follow your steps someday!

Sometimes I just admire the way internet offers resources, inspiration and material -or just artwork to lust for- to everyone of us. I discovered two amazing sites today, having to do with graphic design, that left me totally speechless. I can't but wish and hope that someday will have even the half of the talent of these people, whose work is displayed in these two websites. Take some time to go through them. They are totally incredible.

On Friday 11/12 I was downtown to meet Kelly (my cousin from thecoloureffect) because she was leaving for a short trip to Paris. We accidentally fell on the lighting up of the Christmas tree in the central square of Athens. It was quite chilly but there was quite a bunch of people there to see it. This year the tree has an eco-side, since it is comprised of real firs that will be planted in a burnt area of Athens after the end of Christmas holidays :) The whole decor is really nice with a colour-changing star on the top of the tree and a lot of plexiglass (or maybe plastic?) cubic-shaped firs in nice winter colours like purple, deep turquoise and deep icy blue. Moreover, there are some light balls scattered in the grassy parts of the square, giving a rather futuristic essence (their colours are mostly pale icy tones of pink, blue and turquoise, so they make the perfect match for the vibrant colours of the plexiglass firs). Way to go Athens Municipality! You did a great job this year! I'm proud of my city :)

I have previously confessed that I just LOVE Sophie Ellis-Bextor. I believe her to possess a magnificent charm and mysterious beauty, that of the femme fatales of good old cinema. Her charm is flying high in this video, which is nicely directed in a graphic design layout, with my favourite colours, that is white and grey. Could I ask for more? :)

mastering my roots

These days I'm doing some research for a project we have in History of Art in college. We were given some subjects and we have to write a fairly long essay about two of them. The first one I decided to cope with is a person I have never heard before and I now find him to have a great impact on my -already- minimal taste of modernity. I refer to László Moholy-Nagy, the great Hungarian painter and photographer who was also a professor and head in the Bauhaus school in Weimar for several years.

As I mentioned before, I have never heard of him and I believe it not to be a coincidence that I chose him to work on, since I later discovered his works have this amazing graphic style I like. László Moholy-Nagy was highly influenced by constructivism, so that explains why I like him, just like Kandisky. He was also a strong advocate of the integration of technology and industry into the arts, something that I personally support as well. I'm displaying some of his inspiring and great works. I'm so grateful I discovered this brilliant man.

Hmmm.....Here I am with that big X taking place in my mind for the last week. You see, I have that project for college in which we have to re-design a cd from scratch. My choice was 'Overpowered' by Roisin Murphy. Although I love her music and her unique style, I didn't like the cd design. I thought it would be quite easy or at least enjoyable to re-design something from scratch. I was sooo damn wrong. My mind is absolutely empty. I can't come up with any ideas for it and I think I will have a hard time until this project is finished. This is the first and only draft I have come up with so far.... any feedback is welcome.

I'm feeling very happy and reborn today because winter is finally over Athens. I'm a winter weather lover myself, so that's why I had to shout my happiness :) I don't like warm weather because it makes me feel drowsy and exhausted, whereas cold weather keeps me alert and ready to face any rpoblems. I'm now in my loft, with the central heating on and the carpet finally set on the floor. YAY! Winter is here and is gonna stay -hopefully-.

I was once looking at this tin of colour pencils, drooling and wishing for it, but I knew I really didn't need it because I wasn't painting or drawing on a frequent basis. Yet, my studies now demanded -lol- that I should get it, so, here I am with this nice new shiny tin of 60 Faber Castell water-soluble colour pencils :)

Did I mention I have a certain fetish with stationery stuff? Well, yes. My favourite things are pencils (I'm building a collection of nice wooden pencils from all over the world, including some from New York, Barcelona, Cambridge, Stockholm, Berlin and more) and vintage notebooks.

From the very first time I started dealing with design in general I must admit that the school I admire and appreciate more is that of Scandinavia. There's something so inspiring and impressive in the clean and practical lines/forms of Swedish, Finnish and Danish design (leaving Norway out because it doesn't have a that important history in design) that almost fascinates me. I'm sharing a photo from the famous Design S exhibition which I had the honour to see a month ago in Athens, along with my beloved cousin Kelly, who's studying interior design.
